Barry Brisk Biography
Barry Brisk, Music Director and Conductor of the Beach Cities Symphony since 1994, is a native of Southern California. His musical activities are extensive, having appeared as guest conductor as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra, the United Chinese Musicians Symphony Orchestra of Los Angeles, the West Los Angeles Symphony, and the Topanga Symphony.
Brisk's commitment to new music is long standing. During his 10 years as Music Director of the Beach Cities Symphony he has conducted 13 works by six living composers. He has also conducted pieces by Charles Ives, John Cage, and Stravinsky. His former student, David Robertson, recently appointed Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, was Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris from 1992-2000. In the 1980's Brisk served for three years as Assistant Conductor of the Ojai Festival, with Pierre Boulez and Daniel Lewis.
Brisk is a graduate of the Vienna University of Music (formerly Academy of Music), where he studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky, teacher of Zubin Mehta and Claudio Abbado.
